The past is a guidepost, not a hitching post!
Isn't it funny how we always remember the past just a little better than it actually was at the time? I think this may be one of the reasons we like to hold on to the past. This and our innate fear of change and the unknown.
But how much wiser and happier we would be if we used the past as a guidepost and then moved on in a better direction, a brighter future. Let go of the the hitching post, take the lessons you were to learn with you and leave the past where it belongs, in the past.
